VCE English Units 3 & 4
Unit 4 — Outcome 2 SAC (argument + oral)
Unit 4 Outcome 2 SAC: multimodal written analysis plus point-of-view oral — marks, timing, assessor focus, Section C practice.
Part A — written analysis (indicative)
Often 40 marks for a response to a written persuasive text alongside another mode (visual / audio / audiovisual). Suggested length commonly 700–900 words.
Part B — point of view oral (indicative)
Often 20 marks, 3–5 minutes, presenting a sustained viewpoint with supporting reasons and awareness of audience.
What assessors look for
- Accurate identification of contention and line of argument.
- Analysis of how language and visuals persuade.
- Evidence integrated into reasoned discussion.
- Oral: clarity, structure, and appropriate tone for audience.
Integrating modes in Part A
Do not bolt the visual onto the end. Aim for integrated paragraphs where written and visual evidence cohere — e.g. how a headline’s diction is reinforced by the hero image’s composition. If the task supplies audio, describe sound features (pace, music, voice quality) as persuasive choices, not as background.
Oral success
- Open with contention; preview two or three reasons.
- Use one concrete example per reason (news event, school issue, local detail).
- Gesture and vary pace; avoid reading monotone from full sentences on cards.
- Finish with a sentence that answers “so what?” for your audience.
